Law Society condemns SRA plans for solicitor-free workplace training

SQE could be delayed beyond 2020, SRA admits as top City firm partner lays out concerns
Thursday, 15 June 2017The Solicitors Qualifying Exam could be postponed beyond its launch date of 2020, the Solicitors Regulation Authority has admitted. In a further development, the regulator has said it was possible that the all-powerful central assessor of the new exam could also be a course provider.

Training reforms no “panacea for diversity”, SRA report warns
Thursday, 4 May 2017The training reforms unveiled last week by the Solicitors Regulation Authority are “not a panacea for diversity” though they could make a “significant contribution”, a report for the regulator has concluded. The report also warned that the arrival of the solicitors qualifying examination in 2020 would make the training market “more complex to navigate”.

SRA-backed report: SQE “risks creating tiered system” that favours privileged students

SRA bows to pressure and puts SQE on hold

The SRA’s board was due to decide on whether to go ahead at its meeting yesterday.

SRA announces rethink on training reforms
Wednesday, 23 March 2016Paul Philip, chief executive of the Solicitors Regulation Authority, has announced a rethink on plans to abolish the minimum period of workplace training required by all future solicitors. Meanwhile, the regulator also yesterday launched ‘Law Firm Search’, a new searchable, online database of the law firms it regulates.

City firm launches groundbreaking six-year apprenticeship route to qualification as solicitor
Thursday, 17 March 2016Eversheds and BPP University Law School have launched a six-year apprenticeship scheme leading to qualification as a solicitor. The law firm is believed to be the first to launch a scheme at this level, but its shape depends partly on the fate of the Solicitors Qualification Examination.

SQE could create “even greater diversity problem”, Law Society says
Thursday, 18 February 2016Plans by the Solicitors Regulation Authority to introduce a centrally assessed Solicitors Qualifying Examination could create an “even greater diversity problem” for the profession, the Law Society has warned. The society said it could be a “huge issue for those without financial support”.
