BSB consults on extending cab-rank rule to direct access cases – but comes out against it
Tuesday, 27 June 2017The Bar Standards Board has argued against extending the cab-rank rule to direct access work, on the grounds that access to justice would not improve, it might discourage them from taking instructions from the public, and may lead to clients invoking the rule inappropriately.

First accountancy firm to create ABS takes on second licence
Friday, 11 November 2016The top-30 accountancy firm which in 2013 was the first accountancy practice to acquire an alternative business structure (ABS) licence from the Solicitors Regulation Authority has taken on a second licence from the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.

Now barrister ‘named and shamed’ by LeO is suspended for not paying other barristers
Monday, 20 April 2015Tariq Rehman, the first lawyer to be ‘named and shamed’ by the Legal Ombudsman for a series of complaints, has been suspended by a Bar disciplinary tribunal. The tribunal suspended him for failing to pay three other barristers for work they had carried out.

‘Named and shamed’ barrister banned from public access work

BSB opens up public access to baby barristers

Fresh cab-rank rule row as LSB approves public access reforms
Tuesday, 2 April 2013The Legal Services Board has criticised the Bar Standards Board’s failure to apply the cab-rank rule to public access work and said this omission will reduce the impact of rule changes that widen the scope for barristers dealing directly with clients.
