The Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal has rejected misconduct charges against a solicitor who said he was the victim of technology problems with the Solicitors Regulation Authority’s online system, mySRA, that meant he was not aware of conditions attached to his practising certificate.

The number of practicing and non-practicing solicitors has fallen – for the first time in more than 20 years. Meanwhile, the decline in the number of law firms continued, according to new Law Society statistics.

The Solicitors Regulation Authority has been celebrating the first year of its ABS licensing regime. It is not just a numbers game, but with 74 licences granted in that time and 300-odd still inching their way through the application process, it perhaps hasn’t necessarily been quite as glorious a first year as the SRA is making out – another way of looking at it is that there is a large backlog – but it has certainly been interesting given the range of approvals.

Innovations in legal practice are coming more from traditional law firms than from ABSs, the SRA said last week. Meanwhile, it will this week clarify the position of firms that have submitted COLP and COFA nominations but have not yet received approvals.

The 2012 practising certificate renewal exercise has gone live today with an acknowledgement from the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) that there will be “glitches”. Separately the SRA has published its long-awaited consultation on introducing a leniency scheme for law firm whistleblowers.
