ABS conversion deadline for LDPs under review
Monday, 12 November 2012The Solicitors Regulation Authority is under pressure to extend its April 2013 deadline for legal disciplinary partnerships with non-lawyer partners to become alternative business structures, after the Legal Services Board said it was “unlikely” to insist on it before 2014.

BSB sets course for barrister partnerships in 2013 and ABSs in 2014
Monday, 22 October 2012Barristers are likely to be allowed to form partnerships next year and before they can create alternative business structures, the Bar Standards Board said last week. Meanwhile, it dropped a proposal to force barristers to withdraw from cases where a client refuses to reveal previous convictions to the court.

Juniors hire QC as the ‘barrister law firm’ expands

American bar ditches bid to introduce non-lawyer ownership of firms
Wednesday, 18 April 2012The American Bar Association has dropped plans for any changes to its policy prohibiting the non-lawyer ownership of law firms. Having rejected more radical ideas such as ABSs, it had proposed a form of legal disciplinary practice.

LSB gives green light to barristers joining ABSs
Friday, 26 August 2011The Legal Services Board has approved changes to the Bar Code of Conduct that will allow barristers to become partners and employees of alternative business structures. The bar’s rulebook as currently drafted would prevents barristers from working for an ABS.
