SRA drops ‘group licensing’ approach for firms operating overseas

France says ‘Non’ to ABS
Wednesday, 11 July 2012Alternative business structures cannot be viewed as law firms and will not be allowed to operate in France, the body representing the 179 French bar associations has said. They claimed ABSs conflict with lawyers’ independence.

New York lawyers told they cannot run the Big Apple operation of an ABS with external investors
Thursday, 22 March 2012New York lawyers are banned from running the Big Apple office of a UK alternative business structure with non-lawyer owners, the New York State Bar’s committee on professional ethics announced yesterday.

SRA eyes expanded international reach by offering to regulate foreign firms
Wednesday, 9 November 2011Foreign law firms could choose to be regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority under proposals put forward yesterday. An SRA green paper also suggests introducing a single “passport to practice” for firms with multiple overseas offices.

SRA to review approach to conveyancing, financial stability and international matters
