Not about the money: personal injury firm to open City “client knowledge hub”
Thursday, 9 June 2016Defendant personal injury firm BC Legal is launching an unusual “client knowledge hub” in the City next month, which will provide a range of free services but “very little fee-earning”. It said the hub would offer training, software demonstrations and free access to meeting rooms, a roof terrace, a gym and a hotel.

Solicitor who faked client care letters in “moment of madness” is struck off
Monday, 6 June 2016A solicitor who faked three client care letters and backdated them has been struck off by the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal. The SDT rejected Rafique Chowdhury’s claims that he acted “in a moment of madness” and was “regularising the files, not seeking to mislead anyone”.

Cheap is not cheerful, as only one in 10 choose conveyancer on price
Wednesday, 23 March 2016The proportion of people selecting their conveyancer on price has fallen to only one in ten, a survey of 5,400 home movers has shown. The same survey found that only three years ago 20% of clients chose the cheapest.

Not so clever: 80% of lawyers rate themselves as ‘above average’ but only 40% of clients see it that way

Appeal judges to hear BSB “misleading conduct” case
Thursday, 10 July 2014The Court of Appeal is to hear a disciplinary case which led to the Bar Standards Board being accused by Lord Justice Moses of “misleading conduct”. Meanwhile, a barrister convicted of tenancy fraud has been disbarred.

Crime firms’ “bad treatment” of clients will only get worse with cuts, study predicts
Tuesday, 10 December 2013The academic who earlier this year angered criminal defence practitioners when he revealed research suggesting the firms he shadowed had mistreated their clients, has warned that the legal aid cuts planned by the Ministry of Justice will only make things worse.

That’s the point of deadlines, right? Well, compliance controls are designed so that they are a permanent part of operating culture, not just when you stand by your beds for inspection. This is certainly the case for the requirements under the SRA Handbook revision and cannot be taken lightly.

This month’s blog brings you live coverage of the five-month dash: that’s how long your COLP has to get the firm’s house in order before they become responsible for compliance. Like bog-snorkelling and extreme ironing, the five-month dash is a niche sport, unlikely to grace the Olympics, but pundits are predicting there’ll be a least 11,000 participants by the end of the year.

Most firms in multiple breach of the Solicitors Code of Conduct, says SRA research
Thursday, 1 March 2012The vast majority of law firms are non-compliant with the Solicitors Code of Conduct, research by the Solicitors Regulation Authority has found. Most of the 200 firms assessed had four or five incidences of non-compliance.
