Direct access barrister suspended yet again – for working while suspended
Thursday, 15 June 2017A direct access barrister has received his fifth suspension – for working during one of his previous suspensions. It comes as two barristers are disbarred after being jailed for fraud and the Solicitors Regulation Authority supports move to reduce the standard of proof at Bar disciplinary tribunals.

BSB to review training role of Inns of Court
Friday, 2 June 2017The Bar Standards Board is to review the role of the Inns of Court in the training of barristers, it has emerged. Among the issues are applying admission requirements, approving pupil supervisors, providing training courses for pupils and student discipline.

Direct access chambers and specialist financial services set launch BSB ABSs
Thursday, 1 June 2017A ‘virtual’ chambers that supports direct access work has set up an alternative business structure, as has a niche financial services chambers, which become the second and third to be regulated by the Bar Standards Board. It licensed its first ABS, a collaboration between a London chambers and football agents, earlier this month.

Keep calm and carry on: BSB finds no evidence of “widespread change” at the Bar
Wednesday, 31 May 2017Widespread change” is yet to happen at the Bar, with only a small minority of barristers planning to change the way they work or charge fees, a report for the Bar Standards Board has found. Despite the presence of “strong drivers for change”, the report said this did “not necessarily equate to a need or desire for a new approach”.

Family law solicitor opts for “quick and transparent” BSB entity regulation
Tuesday, 30 May 2017A high-profile family law sole practitioner solicitor has acquired a Bar Standards Board-regulated entity because the no-frills regulation it offered was, she said, an “easy fit” for her low-risk practice. Oxford-based Alexandra Lewis Family Law Limited received BSB authorisation at the end of last month.

High Court rejects appeal from barrister accused of forging letters
Wednesday, 3 May 2017A barrister accused of forging client care letters has lost an appeal against his disbarment at the High Court. Mrs Justice Lang rejected Damian McCarthy’s argument that a Bar disciplinary tribunal was under pressure from the Bar Standards Board to convict him.

Fine for non-practising barrister who held himself out as a solicitor in court
Tuesday, 25 April 2017An unregistered barrister has been fined £1,000 by a Bar disciplinary tribunal for falsely describing himself as a solicitor and appearing in court when he did not have the right to do so. Another non-practising barrister has been disbarred, meanwhile, for stealing from her law firm employer’s petty cash and her colleagues’ handbags.

BSB-regulated pro bono charity folds due to lack of cash and “exhaustion” of barrister founder
Friday, 7 April 2017A Bar Standards Board-regulated charity that provided pro bono legal representation in challenging the unlawful detention of migrants and asylum seekers has been wound up just 15 months after it was authorised due mainly to problems with funding. It appears to be the first BSB entity to be dissolved.

FOIL vice-president opts for Bar Standards Board to set up new business
Monday, 27 March 2017A prominent solicitor-turned-barrister specialising in insurance litigation has set up a chambers under the oversight of the Bar Standards Board, which eventually will offer litigation in addition to advocacy. Stephen Hines is also the vice-chairman of the Forum of Insurance Lawyers.
