Direct access barrister suspended yet again – for working while suspended
Thursday, 15 June 2017A direct access barrister has received his fifth suspension – for working during one of his previous suspensions. It comes as two barristers are disbarred after being jailed for fraud and the Solicitors Regulation Authority supports move to reduce the standard of proof at Bar disciplinary tribunals.

High Court rejects appeal from barrister accused of forging letters
Wednesday, 3 May 2017A barrister accused of forging client care letters has lost an appeal against his disbarment at the High Court. Mrs Justice Lang rejected Damian McCarthy’s argument that a Bar disciplinary tribunal was under pressure from the Bar Standards Board to convict him.

Fine for non-practising barrister who held himself out as a solicitor in court
Tuesday, 25 April 2017An unregistered barrister has been fined £1,000 by a Bar disciplinary tribunal for falsely describing himself as a solicitor and appearing in court when he did not have the right to do so. Another non-practising barrister has been disbarred, meanwhile, for stealing from her law firm employer’s petty cash and her colleagues’ handbags.

Barrister who overturned disbarment at Court of Appeal is disbarred again
Monday, 13 June 2016A barrister who overturned his disbarment at the Court of Appeal last year has been disbarred again. Damian McCarthy was found by a Bar disciplinary tribunal to have forged client care letters, after a direct access client complained.

Dual-qualified barrister disbarred 10 years after being struck off as solicitor
Friday, 27 May 2016A barrister turned solicitor has been disbarred 10 years after he was struck off by the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal. He did not tell the Bar about the decision and the Bar Standards Board only became aware of it last year when Lloyd Aneke applied for restoration to the roll of solicitors.

Dual-qualified lawyer struck off as solicitor is disbarred for “persistent dishonesty”
Monday, 25 January 2016A dual-qualified employment lawyer, struck off as a solicitor last year for deceiving clients, has been disbarred for his “persistent dishonesty”. The Bar Standards Board said Jean Etienne Attala attempted to cover up the fact employment claims he was handling had been struck out.

Reprimand and fine for barrister who admitted talking to jurors after trial
Wednesday, 25 November 2015A barrister who admitted that he had talked to jurors at Basildon Railway Station after a trial has been reprimanded and fined £300 by a Bar disciplinary tribunal. Mohammed Omar Faruk said the incident was unintentional.

Suspension for barrister who appeared in court without practising certificate
Friday, 13 November 2015A Bar disciplinary tribunal has suspended barrister Martin Wynne Jones for three months for representing clients in court without a practising certificate, while disciplinary action has also been taken against a barrister who falsely claimed to have a law degree, and another who made false declarations about criminal convictions.

BSB seeks power to fine barristers cleared by disciplinary tribunals

Bar disciplinary tribunal to rehear disbarment overturned by Court of Appeal
Monday, 17 August 2015A long-running disciplinary case involving accusations that a barrister forged client care letters must be heard again, the Visitors to the Inns of Court have ruled. They said there was “no basis” for saying that the barrister would be deprived of a fair hearing “by reason of delay and/or any prior knowledge” of BSB witnesses.
