Neuberger urges debate over ethical implications of artificial intelligence

Here come the loss adjusters: US giant to launch ABS
Thursday, 16 June 2016Crawford & Company, one of the world’s biggest firms of loss adjusters, has announced that it is setting up an alternative business structure in the UK to offer an end-to-end claims management services. Crawford – which is listed on the New York Stock Exchange – has 27 offices in this country.

‘Umbrella’ alternative business structures aims to build 1,000-lawyer network
Wednesday, 15 June 2016Alternative business structure Lawyers Inc has said it aims to recruit between 800 and 1,000 lawyers over the next five years, having taken over two law firms as it rolls out its groundbreaking model. Director Martyn Caplan said he was talking to a dozen more firms.

Lawyer-led ABSs are leading the way, says head of Jackson Canter as it doubles in size
Thursday, 12 May 2016Lawyer-led alternative business structures are leaving their rivals behind, the head of North West firm Jackson Canter has said. Executive chairman Andrew Holroyd was speaking as the firm announced the acquisition of Lees Solicitors, doubling its size to over 280 staff.

DAS Law launches graduate academy as staff numbers top 200
Friday, 6 May 2016DAS Law – the alternative business structure set up by the eponymous legal expenses insurer – is launching a pioneering graduate academy for “lawyers of the future”, with the first six recruits starting next month. Staff numbers at the firm have doubled to around 220 since it was created in 2013.

After the doctors and nurses, now dentists get an ABS

Report: ABSs punch well above their weight
Wednesday, 27 April 2016Alternative business structures (ABS) make up just 4% of all solicitors’ firms but contributed 11% of the profession’s turnover, research has revealed. The Law Society’s annual statistical report, found ABSs were spread broadly across the different turnover bands, with around 50 of them having income in excess of £10m.

UK seeing benefits of ABS and US “must take note”
Thursday, 7 April 2016Real benefits are emerging from alternative business structures and the US should be open-minded about adopting them, according to an academic study. It found that while ABSs did not amount to a transformation of the industry, their effects on the firms in England and Wales that adopted the business model were positive.

Virtual assistants will mean fewer lawyers, Riverview predicts
Wednesday, 30 March 2016The spread of virtual assistants will not remove the need for lawyers but it will reduce their number, the chief executive of Riverview Law has predicted. Karl Chapman said he was “amazed” by the number of lawyers doing things they did not need to do.
