Barristers unhappy with BSB warning on commercial pressures
Wednesday, 18 May 2016Barristers have complained that the decision of their regulator to make public the risk of commercial pressures damaging the Bar could on its own have a negative impact on the profession’s reputation. There are also reports of “growing anxiety” among young barrister about chambers being run as corporate organisations.

Unregulated firm calls in unregistered barristers to help SMEs
Wednesday, 18 May 2016A new unregulated law firm is using unregistered barristers to offer small businesses “unlimited legal advice” for as little as £49.50 per month. Philip Harmer, founder of LawPlan, said the business “set out to give value, which seems like an impossibility in the legal world”.

Barrister firm to be like solicitors’ practice – “but a better kind of solicitor”
Tuesday, 17 May 2016One of the newest barrister entities has said that using its services will be “like going to a solicitor’s firm, but a better kind of solicitor”. In a separate development, two barristers have set up a BSB-regulated firm to provide clients with a “bespoke service”, principally in sports, entertainment and media law.

Barristers who outsource work must avoid referral fees, Bar Council warns
Monday, 22 February 2016Barristers who outsource work must not “ask for or accept” any payment from third parties, the Bar Council has warned. However, third parties can “for commercial reasons” offer services to barristers at lower than normal rates, so long as the “entire benefit” is passed to lay clients.

Practising fees should be “going down, not up”, LSB says
Thursday, 18 February 2016The Legal Services Board has said it expects the cost of regulating lawyers to be “going down, not up” as it approved a minor increase in the cost of practising for barristers. It said barristers should be given “much greater information” about how their money is spent.

Barrister who claimed to have “same freedoms” as solicitor loses appeal against suspension
Thursday, 24 December 2015A barrister who told a direct access client he had “all the same freedoms” as a solicitor to conduct litigation, when he did not, has lost a High Court appeal against his three-month suspension. Garnham J described Oliver White’s misconduct as “serious”.

Court of Appeal: judges working as barristers do not have to disclose “every ongoing piece of litigation”

Earnings of criminal legal aid barristers fall 8% in two years

New Bar chairman: the BSB is independent enough
