Solicitors should forget about “perfection”, City training chief says

Regulator’s training plans could “promote nepotism”, Law Society president says

SRA puts Solicitors Qualifying Examination at centre of training revolution
Tuesday, 8 December 2015The Solicitors Regulation Authority has set out plans for a centralised assessment test, the Solicitors Qualifying Examination, for all those wanting to join the profession. The new exam would not be introduced before the 2018/19 academic year.

Young lawyers call for centralised assessment test for the LPC

Poll: It’s all about the law – not the business of law
Thursday, 22 October 2015Lawyers at small and medium-sized firms are motivated much more by helping clients than running businesses, research has found. Only a slender majority said they enjoyed managing a business or saw themselves as “entrepreneurial”, compared to the 83% who got a “real buzz” out of practising law.

SRA admits to “missing year” when solicitors will not have to declare training
Wednesday, 21 October 2015Solicitors will not have to declare on their practicing certificates that they carried out professional training for the year 2015-16, the Solicitors Regulation Authority has admitted. However, they will still have to do their training.

Bar Council chairman calls for online training revolution
Wednesday, 29 July 2015Alistair MacDonald QC, chairman of the Bar Council, has called for a revolution in the training of barristers to cut what he described as “astronomical” costs and increase the chances of successful students getting a pupillage. He also raised questions about the non-lawyer ownership of law firms.

Time for law firms to go back to school, says BPP chief
Tuesday, 14 July 2015Legal apprenticeships “are going to be massive” and law firms will have to respond by recruiting A-Level students straight from school, the dean of BPP Law School has predicted. Peter Crisp said he also believed the SRA would “force through” a centralised assessment test for would-be solicitors.

BSB criticises its training course but remains tight-lipped on future

Barrister finishes pupillage at personal injury solicitors
Monday, 6 July 2015In a rare move, a barrister has been allowed to finish her pupillage at a personal injury law firm. Henrietta Hughes is set to become the first in-house counsel at Cheshire and London firm Hilary Meredith Solicitors when her pupillage ends in August.
