Consumer watchdog gives SRA’s ABS application green light – with reservations
Monday, 9 May 2011The Solicitors Regulation Authority’s application to become a licensing body for alternative business structures has been endorsed by the Legal Services Board’s consumer watchdog, but with reservations. The Legal Services Consumer Panel expressed disappointment that some recommendations it made during consultations were not adopted.

SRA approves new conflicts rule as it prepares to publish 563-page Handbook
Monday, 21 March 2011The Solicitors Regulation Authority has substantially reworked its new rule on conflicts of interest, which will come into force later this year. Legal Futures has had advanced sight of the 563-page SRA Handbook ahead of its publication on 6 April, although the new Code of Conduct is just 54 pages.

SRA uses new power to publicly rebuke and fine solicitor for first time

Consumer panel backs separate business rule with dig at the Co-op
Wednesday, 19 January 2011Law firms and alternative business structures should not be allowed to dodge regulation by establishing separate businesses to handle unreserved work, the Legal Services Consumer Panel said this week. The panel also appeared to rebuke Co-operative Legal Services – whose stated intention is to be one of the first ABSs – for calling for freedom in how businesses choose to provide unreserved work.

Confidentiality clash looms as government eyes lawyer lobbyist regulation
Tuesday, 7 December 2010The Law Society is preparing for a government push to make law firms which engage in lobbying work breach confidentiality by making them disclose details of their clients. Last month Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg confirmed the Coalition will legislate in 2011 to introduce a statutory register of lobbyists.

SRA unveils new draft of Handbook to govern both law firms and ABSs from October 2011
Wednesday, 20 October 2010The updated draft of the single Handbook that will govern both traditional law firms and alternative business structures from October 2011 is being unveiled today by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA). This is the last opportunity to comment on it. The latest stage in the SRA’s move to outcomes-focused regulation also includes a call for the Legal Services Board to extend the definition of reserved legal activities to cover all “solicitor activities”.

Do solicitors get a raw deal?
