LSB calls for equal pay audits amid worries about gender and race disparities
Friday, 1 March 2013All legal services providers should undertake and publish equal pay audits, the Legal Services Board (LSB) has suggested – this would ideally be voluntary, “but only if it results in the changes needed”. It came in an LSB review of the evidence on equal pay.

Law Society chief: failure to embrace flexible working holding back partnership diversity
Wednesday, 13 February 2013Only a third of large firms who are signed up to a Law Society diversity charter – including three-quarters of the top-100 – have adopted flexible working, which helps explain why their partnerships remain “overwhelmingly white, heterosexual, male and able bodied”, the society’s president has complained.

Call for gender targets as Law Society president says some men do not deserve to be senior partners
Friday, 11 January 2013Law firms should introduce targets to increase the representation of women lawyers in partnership and senior roles, and turn talk of flexible working into reality, a major new report has recommended, with the Law Society president saying that if career progression was based on pure merit, some senior partners would have got nowhere near the top.

Hundreds of firms face SRA enforcement action over COLP and COFA failure
Wednesday, 26 September 2012Hundreds of law firms that have yet to nominate their compliance officers could soon face enforcement action, the SRA has warned. Separately the SRA is to conduct visits to 100 random law firms to check on their compliance with equality and diversity rules, while more than 10,000 solicitors have registered their intention to join QASA.

SRA calls in race relations expert to review its decisions

This month’s blog brings you live coverage of the five-month dash: that’s how long your COLP has to get the firm’s house in order before they become responsible for compliance. Like bog-snorkelling and extreme ironing, the five-month dash is a niche sport, unlikely to grace the Olympics, but pundits are predicting there’ll be a least 11,000 participants by the end of the year.

Law firms to have extra year before publishing diversity data as LSB flags concerns over Bar exemptions
Thursday, 31 May 2012Law firms are to have an extra year before they must publish staff diversity data, after the Legal Services Board approved Solicitors Regulation Authority plans for a delay. But it was unhappy with the Bar Standards Board’s proposal to exempt chambers of fewer than 10 people.
